Custom Five panel Hanger Boxes

Five panel hanger boxes are built to hang. Literally. They’ve got a built-in hook tab, fold flat, and come together in a few seconds — no glue, no extras. These are great for lightweight stuff that needs to be seen on the wall, not buried on a shelf. Think cables, lip balm, or trial-size anything.

Why Many Retail Products Use a Five Panel Hanger Structure

Small retail products rarely get much shelf space. In many stores, items such as charging cables, batteries, cosmetic tools, craft supplies, and accessories are placed on peg hooks so shoppers can scan them quickly. A regular folding carton can hold the product, but it is not ready for peg display unless a separate hanger card or plastic tab is added.

This is where five panel hanger boxes become useful.

The fifth panel is built into the carton layout and extends above the main box body. A euro slot, round hole, or custom hang cut is added to that panel, so the carton can go straight onto a retail peg. Since the hanging area is part of the die line, there is no need to attach an extra display card later.

For the brand, this keeps things simple. One carton protects the product, carries the printed design, and supports the retail display.

If your product will sit on a shelf rather than hang from a peg wall, you may want to compare our reverse tuck end boxes or straight tuck end boxes. Both use a more familiar folding carton structure for standard retail display.

The Fifth Panel Does More Than Hold the Box

Many first-time buyers assume the hanger panel is simply added to the back of the carton. In reality, its position affects how the entire box performs once it reaches the store.

The location of the hang hole influences how the carton balances on the peg. If it sits too low, the box may lean forward. If it sits too close to the edge, repeated handling can weaken the board around the slot.

Product weight matters just as much.

A lightweight USB cable behaves very differently from a small bottle of adhesive or a metal hardware component. As the product becomes heavier, the board grade and hanger design become increasingly important.

These details are usually decided during structural design rather than after the artwork is finished.

Products That Commonly Use This Carton Style

This box style is used across many retail industries because it keeps products visible without increasing shelf space.

Common applications include:

  • Cosmetic brushes and beauty accessories
  • Charging cables and phone accessories
  • Small electronic components
  • Fishing tackle
  • DIY hardware
  • Sewing supplies
  • Batteries
  • Craft products
  • Pet accessories
  • Children’s toys
  • Promotional items

Some brands also add an insert to keep smaller products centered inside the carton. Inserts help reduce movement during shipping and improve presentation once the customer opens the box.

Choosing the Right Board Grade Makes a Difference

The board should always be selected around the product rather than simply choosing the thickest material available.

SBS paperboard remains one of the most common choices for custom five panel hanger boxes because it prints sharply, folds cleanly, and produces crisp edges for retail cartons.

Kraft stock works well for brands that prefer a more natural appearance, especially handmade products or environmentally conscious product lines.

For products with more weight, E-flute corrugated board may provide additional rigidity while still maintaining a clean retail appearance.

One detail many buyers overlook is the area above the hang hole. Leaving enough board between the slot and the carton edge helps reduce the chance of tearing during repeated stocking and customer handling.

Small Design Choices That Improve Retail Display

On a peg display, the front panel has to work quickly. Shoppers are usually walking past, comparing several products at once, so the name, size, and main product detail should be easy to catch without reading every line.

Keep the layout clean around the fold lines. Text placed too close to a score can look uneven after the carton is assembled. The same applies to the hanger slot. If artwork sits too tight around the cutout, the top panel can start to look crowded.

Matte lamination, gloss coating, spot UV, embossing, and foil stamping can all suit this box style. For many retail products, the best place for a special finish is the upper front panel, because that area sits closest to eye level once the box is hanging.

Before artwork is sent for proofing, our guide on how to prepare packaging artwork for printing can help you avoid small file issues that often slow down production.

Questions Worth Answering Before Production Starts

Before ordering five panel hanger boxes for retail, it helps to answer a few practical questions.

Will the carton hang on a standard euro hook?

How much does the filled product weigh?

Will the box be assembled manually or on an automated line?

Does the product need an insert?

Will customers need to see the product through a window opening?

These answers influence the die line, board grade, closure style, and overall carton dimensions long before production begins.

If additional bottom strength is required, you may also want to explore our auto bottom boxes, which provide greater support for heavier retail products.

Built Around Your Product Instead of Standard Sizes

Retail displays rarely work well with oversized cartons. A properly sized folding box not only looks better on the shelf, it also reduces unnecessary movement inside the carton and helps products remain upright while hanging.

At Hello Custom Boxes, every order is produced around your product dimensions, branding, and retail requirements. Whether you need short production runs for a new launch or larger wholesale quantities, we can manufacture five panel hanger boxes that fit your product and your display strategy from the beginning.

It’s a tuck-end folding carton with an extra panel that folds up from the back to form a little header tab. That tab is die-cut with a hole (an “EU” slot or a round hole) so the box hangs straight on a peg — no extra hang-tag or tape needed.
They’re made for small, light items — think roughly under half a pound, the sort of thing a customer picks up with one hand: chargers, lip balm, trial skincare, small repair kits and the like.
Pouches can crumple and shift; blister packs give you little room to tell your story. A hanger box holds its shape on the hook, doesn’t flop or lean, and gives you several printable panels to show branding, instructions or ingredients.
Imagine a regular tuck box. Now extend the back panel up and fold it over the top; that extension becomes the header tab with the die-cut hole. It still ships flat, but when folded and filled it hangs vertically and faces forward on the peg.
