Holographic board gives packaging a changing reflective surface rather than a fixed printed appearance. How that surface works depends on the artwork, ink coverage, material, and shape of the finished carton. Holographic packaging boxes can be produced for cosmetics, gifts, displays, mailers, food products, and other retail goods, but the specification still needs to start with what is being packed and how the box will be used.
Colors behave differently when the background is reflective. Light ink coverage can allow some of the holographic pattern to influence the printed area, while more opaque coverage can create a steadier background.
This becomes important around ingredients, instructions, barcodes, and small type. These details need enough contrast to remain clear on the finished carton.
With custom printed holographic foiling boxes, artwork preparation should identify the areas where reflection is wanted and those where consistent print matters more. Doing this on the dieline also keeps important information clear of folds, glue areas, and closing flaps.
Sometimes the material works better in selected areas.

If the tray is too deep, small items can lean or fall forward as stock is removed. A high front wall may hide the products left at the back. Side walls and the rear panel also need to suit the height and weight of the contents.
For a holographic display box, the upright header deserves separate attention because it receives light differently from the tray below. Checking the assembled display gives a more realistic view of how that surface will appear in a store.
Shipping adds handling conditions that retail cartons may never experience.
A mailer can rub against other parcels, move across conveyor equipment, and have other boxes stacked above it. This matters when a decorative surface forms part of the exterior.
A holographic mailer box can use the reflective treatment outside, inside, or in selected areas depending on the intended presentation. Using it internally is worth considering when the visual reveal matters more than having a reflective shipping surface.

A holographic metallic foil box can use foil alongside other printed or reflective elements, although the finishes need enough separation for each one to remain visible. In many cases, one controlled reflective detail is clearer than several competing effects.
The paperboard base is only one part of some holographic materials.
Depending on the production method, a film, laminate, coating, or other surface treatment may create the reflective appearance. Windows and adhesives can introduce further materials into the finished box.
