Ice Cream Cups Packaging

Paper ice cream cups must hold dense frozen dairy without softening from internal melt or external condensation. The right board weight, barrier lining, rim construction and lid fit determine whether the cup stays serviceable from freezer to customer.

How Paperboard and Coatings Handle Melt and Condensation

Most production runs use food-grade paperboard between 250 and 350 gsm. SBS stock delivers a smooth white surface for clean colour reproduction. Kraft stock shows natural fibre and can feel slightly more rigid in the hand. Both require an interior moisture barrier lining. A single-side lining stops melt from soaking the fibres during short counter service. A double-side lining adds protection on the exterior that limits condensation from turning the outside soft once the cup leaves the freezer.

Lower-gsm board reduces cost and packs tighter in cartons, yet loses sidewall stiffness more quickly once moisture appears. Heavier board costs more per cup and occupies slightly more shipping volume, but retains shape longer under dense scoops and repeated temperature cycles.

How Scoop Weight Changes Sidewall Demands

Four-ounce cups suit tasting portions or children’s servings. Six- and eight-ounce sizes handle a standard single or double scoop with modest topping space. Twelve- and sixteen-ounce cups leave room for sundaes or soft-serve with sauce. Greater capacity increases outward and downward force on the wall. A steeper taper and a consistent rolled rim resist that force better than a shallow angle or thin rim curl. Hard-packed gelato places higher demand on sidewall stiffness than soft-serve eaten within a few minutes.

Selecting Lids That Stay Secure from Freezer to Counter

Paper lids protect the product surface and reduce freezer burn on pre-packed cups. Flat lids keep the top clean for stacking. Dome-style paper lids clear whipped cream or tall toppings. The lid must match the finished rim diameter tightly. Temperature changes can affect fit, so checking the seal on actual cold samples prevents air entry or accidental removal during handling.

Building Artwork Around the Formed Seam

Flexographic or offset printing suits higher volumes; digital printing works for shorter runs. Low-odour food-safe inks are required because dairy fat and sugar absorb residual solvent smells. Full-wrap graphics are possible, yet the vertical side seam always interrupts continuous patterns. Artwork must be planned around that seam location or the design will appear broken after forming. Heavy solid ink coverage slows drying and can cause rub when nested cups are packed tightly. A light aqueous coating protects the print without adding noticeable thickness or changing the board’s hand feel.

Maintaining Shape When Cups Sit Stacked in Freezers

Filled and lidded cups in a commercial freezer carry vertical load through the rim and base. Lower-gsm cups show more ovalisation and height loss after 48–72 hours at –18 °C. Heavier board and a well-formed rim curl hold the load more effectively. Side-seam glue or heat-seal strength also matters; weak seams can open under combined moisture and compression. Cups used only for same-day scoop service can use lighter construction. Retail or wholesale packs that remain in the freezer for days or weeks need the tighter specification.

Specs That Lead to Accurate Production Quotes

Provide finished capacity or the three key dimensions (top diameter, bottom diameter, height), expected fill weight, whether the cups will see extended freezer storage or only short service, preferred board colour (white SBS or kraft), lining preference (single or double barrier), number of print colours, lid style if required, and approximate order volume. Artwork files should include bleed and clearly mark the intended seam position. A physical sample filled with product and left in your own freezer for a full day still gives the clearest confirmation before production begins.
